November: Haarlem, NL~ Corrie Tin Boom house

While visiting Haarlem, we toured the Corrie Tin Boom house.  Corrie, her father, and sister were a remarkable family filled with love, faith, and the desire to serve others.   Her story has touched our hearts, and the hearts of people around the world.

The Tin Booms were Dutch citizens.  Unlike  Anne Frank who was a Jew in hiding, this story is told from the perspective of the family hiding the Jews.  During WW2, the Tin Boom family hid hundreds of Jews in their house.  They saved nearly 800 lives.  Corrie's father owned a watch shop on the ground level in the center of Haarlem with their home attached behind the shop.   If a German official came into the shop, the family secretly rang a bell in the apartment signaling to the Jews to go into 'the hiding place.'   Later, the family was tipped off by a fellow Dutch citizen, and the 3 were sent to a concentration camp.  The father and sister died, but Corrie survived to share her story.  Her faith was unbelievable and incredibly strong.  She went on to share her ministry worldwide  as a public speaker.  What an amazing family!

If you make it to Amsterdam, be sure to go to Haarlem to see this house and hear their incredible story.   About 15 of us sat around this living room while one of the employees told us the story of Corrie and her family.   The employees are very passionate about the story and her mission of love and service.

the hiding place

The Jews would enter the hiding place in the lower shelf of the linen closet where there was a faux wall.  5-6 people usually crammed in there for long periods of time.  When they were not signaled by the bell, they were allowed to quietly roam freely throughout the apartment.

This plaque says, "Corrie Ten Boom Prisoner of the Lord Jesus"

Later, Corrie Tin Boom wrote the book, "The Hiding Place."   And there is also a movie based on their story.   Corrie became world-renown as she shared her story with others.

Here, you can watch a movie on her story.
