This weekend we received a few days of glorious, warm, spring-like weather. It was a big TEASE! Today is supposed to be warm, but rainy...BOO! But that bit of weather gave me the itch to start planting my cool weather veggies. This is Mike & I's second year of gardening. My dad found the book, All New Square Foot Gardening by Mel Bartholomew, so we started our square foot gardens last spring. Planting in a garden is work, but it puts my mind in such a peaceful place. There really is something to be said for getting in touch with the earth. I could garden every day for hours, and it's so rewarding to grow your own vegetables and see beautiful flowers & plants grow. I know, I know...you're thinking, "You get excited about vegetables?!?" Yes, I admit it...I do! I love watching them grow knowing that I'm eating healthy organic veggies and saving money while doing it is just a bonus. I'll be posting progress photos as my plants continue to grow.
I planted romaine lettuce, red leaf lettuce, broccoli, and purple cabbage (mainly for color, but it'll be good for slaw too). Those are all cool weather veggies.
This chicken wire cage is used while the plants are small and helps keep rabbits & squirrels from nibling on our food!
As you can see, I bought these veggies as plants from the store since I didn't start my seeds early enough for the cool veggies. I am getting ready to start the seeds for my summer veggies. We'll be doing basil, cherry & regular tomatoes, sweet bell peppers, carrots, cucumbers, oregano, and maybe some sunflowers. We'll see how those go & what else I decide to add.
