May: Czech Republic~ Part 3

On our 3rd day, we toured Prague's Jewish Quarter.   Today, the Jewish quarter is filled with beautiful Art Nouveau style apartment buildings.

Today, it's a very upscale avenue of shops.

We started our tour of the Jewish sites at the Pinkas Synagogue.  We weren't allowed to take photos in most of the buildings.  This synagogue became a memorial to the 77,297 Jewish Czechoslowak victims since WWII.  Their names are inscribed on all the walls of the synagogue.  It was quite moving to see.

Upstairs, there was a display case showing children's drawings & paintings depicting their lives in the Tezerin concentration camp.  It was very powerful and very sad.

Next, we visited the Old Jewish Cemetery.   It dates back to 1478.   There are 12,000 gravestones, but 100,000 people are buried there.   Along time ago, they used to bury people in layers.   It is 12 layers deep.

~At the cemetery, we saw a lady with a MO Botanical Gardens' bag.  So, I started a conversation with her.   We also saw a person wearing a Cardinals' t-shirt another day.   Small world!~

Family and friends put rocks and paper on the gravestones as a sign of respect.

Spanish Synagogue

(Photos were allowed at this particular synagogue.)

The Spanish synagogue was the most recent synagogue and dates back to 1868.  It's interior is of Moorish design.

We also toured the Jewish town hall and a few other synagogues that explained more about life & customs of the Jews.

Time for an ice cream!
