On our last day we had a late evening flight, so we were able to enjoy almost the whole day. We headed over to Ancient Rome and took a tour of the Colosseum, Palatine Hill, and the Roman Forum. Years ago while we were in college, we did a self-guided tour of some of these sites. This time, we decided to sign up for a tour guide group and are so glad we did. To hear the stories of the animals and gladiators that fought here and about the Emperors and people who lived during this time was phenomenal. It made our tour that much more memorable.
Colosseum
The Cross marked the spot of the Emperor's Box
Imagine all of what you see being covered in marble! That is what the Colosseum looked like back in its former glory.
This picture shows the only place that still has a little marble. Although difficult to tell, it's a shot of the ceiling.
This is how the Colosseum looked originally before it caught on fire. It even had a canopy to shade the spectators. Did you know that marble is flammable?
The redesign
Ciao from Roma!
Hanging with the Gladiators!
Palatine Hill
This hill is where Rome first began, and where the emperor's family and their staff lived.
Circus Minimus: where chariot races took place for the Emperor and his family
Roman Forum
The Forum is where daily life took place. It was the where the market took place, where government officials met, where people practiced their religion, and many other things. It is now in ruins.
When St. Peter's was being built, the builders took travertine, gold, and other materials from the Roman Forum to build the interior of St. Peter's.
Arrivederci, Roma!
