April: Easter break~ Part 2

One day, some friends of ours and the three of us drove to Waterloo, a suburb of Brussels, to see The Lion's Mound.

Here in this farmland, the Battle of Waterloo took place almost 200 years ago on June 18, 1815.  Napoleon's French army fought the Dutch, Prussian, and British soldiers on this soil, but ultimately lost the battle.   The loss of this battle put an end to Napoleon as ruler of France.

However during the battle, the Lion's Mound was not there.  It was built since then to commemorate the place were the King of Netherland's son, William II, was hit in the shoulder & knocked off his horse by a musket ball.   It was completed in 1826 and now provides panoramic views of the farmlands where the battle took place.

Once a year, a battle re-enactment takes place on the anniversary.  This year will be the 200 year anniversary of the Battle of Waterloo.

Zoo Days

Another day during spring break, we took the kids to our local zoo.  The weather was lovely!

European playgrounds!

I look sweet, but don't try to pet me!  I'll bite you!

(We watched a lady try to pet this pelican many times and saw it snap at her over and over.  She laughed and kept doing it.  Serves her right!)

Warm enough to play in the water
