Tuscany: On the coast~ Part 1

Michael and I have always had Tuscany at the top of our list even before we moved abroad.  Tuscany is one of those places that sounds incredibly romantic.  Elegant vineyards...complex red wines...heavenly food...stunning, ancient hill-top villages...

So 2 weeks after my parents left Belgium and 1 day after school let out in mid-June, we met Tim & Claire, my brother and his wife, in Rome.  They had spent a few fun days there seeing all the ancient sights prior to our arrival.  Once we arrived, we rented a car and drove north about 2-1/2 to 3 hours to Southern Tuscany.  We stayed in a great villa in the charming beach town of Castiglione della Pescaia.  What a treat to be there!  This charming beach town was lively, but not overly populated by tourists.   Out of our 7 full days, we were able to go to the beach all but one day.  In addition to our beach time, we visited several hilltop villages/cities, relaxed on a nearby island, and enjoyed a wine tour, tasting, & fabulous lunch at a gorgeous winery.  This trip was an amazing one!  It was so easy for all of us to fall in love with our beach town, the delicious food, the ever-flowing wine, and the breathtaking scenery that Tuscany has to offer.  Most of all, it was so much fun being able to spend it together.

Everyday, we went to the same place to rent our umbrella and chairs.  It was so fun to get to know the owner, try to speak Italian (a few greetings anyway!), and completely relax in this wonderful place.

Almost everyday, we ate lunch at this café where we also rented our umbrella and chairs.  It was right there on the beach.  The adults enjoyed some refreshing white wine while the kids were able to have a soda.  The food ranged from calamari, pasta, bruschetta, salads, risotto, and so much more.  It was a nice break from our beach activities.
