Tuscany: San Gimignano~ Part 4

After our afternoon in Siena, we decided to spend the evening in San Gimignano.  This quaint hill town is more of a small village than the city of Siena.   A pretty drive through vineyards and rolling hills led us from Siena to San Gimignano.  Upon arriving, we encountered a huge downpour of rain and a significant drop in temperature.  We waited out the rain in the car, and once it slowed enough, we ventured into this old, charming village.  And we are so glad we did!

Rain in San Gimignano! (1st stop was buying umbrellas and sweatshirts!)

Lovely buildings

Even in the rain, it was so beautiful!  We almost had these streets to ourselves since it was early evening upon arrival.  Most other tourists left when the rain hit.

One of the many wine shops (notice the cave cellar in the back!)

We found a park which appeared to be the highest point of the village.  Here are some views out of San Gimignano and its surrounding countryside.

This small village is sometimes referred to as "Medieval Manhatten" because of all the towers.  A long time ago around the 15th century, feuding families competed with one another by building towers.  The more towers equaled higher status for the family.   Only about 14 remain of what used to be 72 towers.

So glad to be able to share these memories with my brother!

Our day of visiting Siena and San Gimignano was spectacular!  I don't think any of us, especially our driver Mike, will forget the long drive home from San Gimignano to Castiglione della Pescaia.  While our drive to Siena was mostly highway, our drive home from San Gimignano was not.  There were no highways nearby, so we drove up and down the curvy, rolling hills from hill town to hill town in the rain late at night.  But again, it was so worth it!
